Back to all guides🏞️ What you are about to discover: Aglen is a mosaic of natural and historical treasures gathered a few steps from one another. Within one short distance, three entirely different worlds are woven together here.
The majestic karst — monumental limestone cliffs and arches rising above the valley.
The emerald Vit — the river's quiet flow, which has carved cool pools and rock sills.
The village memory — the welcoming centre with its old church, cobbled lanes and honest stone houses.
Important: The places here are described as they are known in the village. How passable the paths are changes with the season, so ask locally before setting off towards the more remote rocks.
📸 Photography tips: The golden hour on the rocks. The cliffs and natural arches give their best at sunrise and sunset: soft light washes the limestone in warm gold, and deep shadows bring out the shapes. At midday the contrast is too harsh and the relief disappears. The magic of the river. Head for the bank early in the morning — the surface is mirror-smooth then, the reflections are cleanest, and a thin mist often drifts above the water.

Comfortable shoes with grip — the ground is uneven and stony.
Enough water for the whole walk.
Sun protection — a hat, sunglasses and cream, especially for the open rock plateaus.
Respect for the quiet of the village and for private yards.
Important: The rock edges above the valley are wild and unfenced. Keep children a safe distance from the drops, and do not approach the edge in wet, rainy or icy conditions.
Dupkata: A natural rock arch above the Vit River and one of the most photogenic places around Aglen.
Sloncheto: A curious rock form that has become one of the symbols of the region.
The Red Cliff: A striking view of the canyon landscape shaped by the cliffs and the river.
Rachkov Vir: A picturesque river pool, ideal for rest, photos, a natural river jacuzzi, and fishing.
St. Archangel Michael: A historic church that preserves the village's spiritual heritage, built in 1888 in honour of the local people who died as victims of the Turkish raids.
Kaleto: A locality connected with the ancient history of the area and the old roads along the Vit valley.
