The Lukovit Karst

The Fore-Balkan karst district around Lukovit — caves, rock cliffs, arches and the Vit River canyon that holds Aglen.

Welcome to one of the great stories in stone of the Fore-Balkan. Here, beside the slow water of the River Vit and the village of Aglen, nature has been carving its masterpiece for millions of years. The Lukovit Karst is a lasting alliance between rock and water — a world of towering cliffs, natural bridges, monumental arches and dark caves. Drop by drop and flood after flood, the water has worked its way through hard stone. What it left behind is the carved canyon of the Vit, the sky-lit vault of Prohodna cave with its famous “Eyes of God”, the rock window called Dupkata, and a whole valley of forms that stop you where you stand.

Places Travel guide

The district is named after the town of Lukovit, a municipal centre in Lovech Province on the Zlatna Panega river.

As the village tells it the limestones of the district are described as belonging to the Lomech and April beds, mostly of the Lower Cretaceous.
